The Story of a Maestro – Roger Federer

Written by: Eshaan, Reporter in ISFM

Roger Federer is widely known to be the best tennis player of all time on and off the court. I’m sure you all know what he did on the court but off the court he did more than just play tennis, so today we’re going to learn who Roger Federer is on and off the court.

Early days

Roger Federer was born in Basel Switzerland where tennis was not a popular sport; most sports played by the locals were football (soccer) and skiing. However that did not stop Roger as he kept his passion for soccer but pursued his tennis journey, at age 7 he went to an academy for tennis and started to be a very talented prospect. Then he went to Swiss Indoors where he became a ball boy and a hometown sensation.

An exciting prospect

After his day in basel he decided to focus on his craft and went pro. Professional tennis for Roger Federer was mixed with amazing talent and even wins against greats, Federer’s first major win over a great Andre Agassi occurred at the 2003 Tennis Masters Cup (ATP Finals). Even with amazing talent he still couldn’t find that last push to win a title until 2003 where he won Wimbledon for the first time defeating Mark Phillipoussis in the finals lifting that trophy he wanted since his early days in Basel.

His name was Roger Federer

Roger Federer finally reached his peak in 2006 winning almost 95% of his matches and winning 3 major titles and winning twelve other trophies but all of that came crashing down as new sensation Raphael Nadal stepped into the game and crashed Federer’s party winning the french open finals completely obliterating federer and in the Wimbledon finals one of the most iconic matches of all time(Wimbledon Final 2008), But all hope was not lost as in 2009 Nadal was injured and Federer won his first French Open making him closer to his career grand slam.

The beginning of the end

Roger Federer has won everything that can be won but he wanted to keep going, however the beginning of the end started in 2010/2011 because of dominance from rivals like Raphael Nadal but also someone else… Novak Djokovic started dominating Rogers favorite ground Wimbledon while also consistently winning the Australian open making Federer  inconsistent being injured and just never finding the time to get in his groove.

Comeback

Roger Federer was put in the mud ever since Novak and Nadal kept dominating, but that didn’t stop Roger. In 2017 he made an immense comeback winning Wimbledon and Australian open and in 2018 another Australian open after being number 17 in 2016 he climbed his way back to number 1 at 36 being the oldest to do so Roger Federer was at the top of the world being from a ball boy in Basel’s Swiss Indoors to being the best tennis player whoever lived(arguably)

The Maestro

Roger Federer has been an influence tour young generation ever since he came onto the court but in 2022 he stepped off the court marking an incredible career his last match was with Raphael Nadal who used to be his rival but now his friend and they played Roger’s last ever match at the laver cup doubles and when the match ended Roger walked off the court marking the end of “The Maestro”.
