In this article, we’ll be talking about Bossaball, a strange game that combines many sports.
Introduction
Bossaball is a sport that probably not many people have heard of. To describe this sport in one sentence, it would be: Bossaball is a fusion sport, combining volleyball, soccer, gymnastics, and capoeira, all on a bouncy, inflatable surface with a trampoline in the center of the court.
This sport highlights acrobatic movement, creativity, and momentum.
Rules
The rules of bossaball are formed from the many sports it combines, sometimes giving a bizarre point-of-view of the game.
Teams:
- There are two teams formed of 2 to 5 players on each side.
Objective:
- The goal of the game is to hit the ball over the net, and make it land on the opponent’s half of the court. The trampoline in the center of the court offers great movement, and allows you to complete high jumps, and spectacular spikes.
Scoring:
- If you manage to land the ball on the opponent’s inflatable area, that’s 1 point.
- If it lands on their trampoline, 3 points are awarded
- However, if you somehow spike it directly onto their trampoline, that’s 5 points added to the scoreboard.
Other:
- Players may hit the ball with any part of their body, so everything like kicks, headers, and flips are allowed.
The court
A bossaball court is constituted of a large, inflatable court, with a volleyball net dividing it into two halves. It has a trampoline on each side of the court, right next to the net. Then, on the outside of the trampolines, is the playing area, where most plays happen.
The last zone, the outermost one, is the safety zone. If the ball lands here, the team with the ball in their safety zone may bounce, or roll the ball. This is a free zone, so no points are won when the ball ends up here.
However, if the ball lies still in this zone, and it doesn’t move, then the opposing team gets a point.
Origins
Bossaball was created in 2004 by the Belgian Filip Eyckmans. He created it in Spain, inspired by his love for sports, music, and movement, which is why rhythm and music often accompany games.
The name “Bossaball” comes from the Portuguese word bossa meaning style, or flair. This sport is a mix of Brazilian, Spanish and Belgian culture, from the rules, all the way to the samba-referees, who not only officiate the game, but also acts as an MC, DJ, and percussionist.
Why Bossaball is special
Bossaball is special in many ways, with the strange rules, and funky-looking court, but it’s also special in a cooler way. It’s unique, because it’s the only sport to integrate sport, performance, and entertainment. They often play music in the background of a game, and the bossaball players do all sorts of special flips, which makes it appealing to all ages.
Conclusion
In the end, Bossaball isn’t just a sport, it’s an incorporation of music, movement, and pure creativity. Its mix of athletic skill and acrobatic freedom makes it unlike anything else on the court. As it continues to spread worldwide, more and more athletes and fans are discovering its dynamic energy. One thing is certain: Bossaball is redefining what modern sport can look like.
You should try it out one day, you’ll have so much fun!
