The most expensive tickets in FIFA world cup history: the 2026 World Cup

From five-hundred dollars worth (adjusted for today’s worth) for an average ticket during the 2006 world cup to nine-hundred dollars this year, the world cup ticket prices have significantly increased in the past twenty years. So what exactly is happening?

Dynamic pricing and high demand

The combination of dynamic pricing and enormous demand (over 500 million ticket requests), FIFA set prices at an all time high to increase profits resulting in prices of up to eleven thousand for final tickets, eleven times more than last year. To explain dynamic pricing, if demand is high, prices are high and vice versa. Comparing the amount of ticket requests from Qatar which used a similar random drawing system, the numbers escalated by around two-thousand eight-hundred present, or a thirty time increase from seventeen million. The high demand is mainly due to a couple of important factors: its unique format of forty-eight teams, the large size and the tournament being hosted in three different countries all lead to large interest from the public.

Transportation issues

On top of the most expensive tickets in history, the tournament being hosted in three different nations causes another major problem for fans: transportation. Stadiums can be as far as eight-thousand kilometers apart or five thousand miles from one another, leading fans to need to travel long distances that may cost a lot of money. This issue is seemingly problematic, but the odds of even getting one ticket request accepted are very low, less than a one percent chance, so getting two accepted tickets is a one in ten thousand. Additionally, the odds of getting stadiums that are very far apart, such as Mexico City and Vancouver are even lower, so this problem is not a major concern.
