Volleyball is a team sport that is played with two teams of six players each. The main goal of the game is to score points by sending the ball over a net and into the opponent’s side of the court. Players use their hands, arms, and sometimes other parts of their body to pass and hit the ball. ( But mostly use hands and arms)

The Rules of Volleyball

The game begins with a serve, where a player from one team hits the ball over the net to the other team. The receiving team then tries to return the ball, and both teams continue to hit the ball back and forth. Players can hit the ball three times on their side of the court before it must go over the net.

Here are the basic rules:

  • Each team can hit the ball up to three times before sending it over the net.
  • The ball must not touch the ground on a team’s side of the court.
  • Points are scored when the ball lands on the opponent’s side or if the opposing team makes a mistake, such as hitting the ball out of bounds or failing to return it.

Scoring in Volleyball

Volleyball is played in sets. A team wins a set by scoring 25 points, and the first team to win three sets wins the match. A team can score points in several ways:

  • The ball lands on the opposing team’s side of the court.
  • The opposing team makes a mistake, such as hitting the ball out of bounds or not returning it properly.

Positions in Volleyball

Each player in volleyball has a specific role or position:

  • Outside hitter: This player is responsible for attacking the ball and scoring points.
  • Setter: This player sets up the ball for other players to attack.
  • Libero: A defensive player who helps with passing and receiving serves. The libero does not attack the ball.
  • Right-side hitter: This player helps with both offense and defense.
  • Middle hitter/blocker: This player is usually in charge of blocking attacks from the opposing team and attacking from the middle of the court.

Basic Skills in Volleyball

The following skills are essential for playing volleyball:

  • Serve: The first action that starts the game or a new point. The server hits the ball over the net to the other team.
  • Pass: The skill used to receive a serve or a hit from an opponent. It is usually done by bumping the ball with the arms.
  • Set: A skill used to pass the ball to a teammate in a way that makes it easier for them to attack the ball.
  • Spike: A powerful hit used to send the ball forcefully over the net.
  • Block: A defensive move used to stop an attacking ball at the net.
