In this article, we’ll be talking about the sensational Gene Conley.
First off, I have to inform you that Donald Eugene Conley (full name) was born almost 100 years ago, and he sadly passed away in 2017 as one of the most influential and important American athletes of all time. Gene was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma on November 10th, 1930. At a young age, Gene moved to Richland, Washington with his family. He played lots of sports for his school team and soon reached the all-state basketball and baseball teams and also won the title as the best high jumper of the state. When Gene was 22 years old, in 1952, he started his baseball career. And in 1952, he also started his basketball career. In baseball, he played as a pitcher for 4 different teams:
- In 1952, he played for Boston
- From 1954 to 1958, for the Milwaukee Braves
- From 1959 to 1960, for the Philadelphia Phillies
- And from 1961 to 1963, for the Boston Red Sox
On September 21st, 1963 Gene decided to retire from his baseball career. He did make a great haul though, winning the honor of the world championships, and a few league titles.
He started his basketball career as a forward in 1952, and played all the way until 1968. The teams he played for were:
- He played for the Boston Celtic in the 1952-1953 season, and in the 1958-1961 season.
- For the Washington Tapers in the 1961-1962 season.
- The New York Nicks in the 1962-1964 season.
- And the Hartford Capitols in the 1966-1968 season.
He won the Pacific Coast Conference North Division with the Washington Tapers.
Then he finally retired for good in 1969.
