How do you start a game in basketball?

In basketball, to start a game, two players of a team go in the center of the field and put one of their hands in the middle, then, the coach arrives with the ball, goes in the center and throws the balls in the air, the two players jump in the air and try to flick the ball to their team’s side of the field. To get the ball in the air, you need to slap the ball on the side where your team defends the other team. It is called the Jump Ball.

What does it mean to jump the ball?

It is a method of putting a basketball into play by tossing it into the air between two opponents who jump up and attempt to tap the ball to a teammate. Also: a ball put into play in this manner.

What constitutes a jump ball in the NBA?

A jump ball is a method used to begin or resume playing basketball. It is similar to a face-off in ice hockey and field lacrosse and a ball-up in Australian rules football. Two opposing players attempt to gain control of the ball after an official tosses it into the air between them.

Why don’t they have jump balls anymore?

In 1981, college basketball went away from jump balls during the game and added the possession arrow, with high schools quickly following suit. The reasoning is that the jump ball gives taller and more athletic players a clear advantage, while the arrow alternates possessions between the teams.

Who has the most jump balls won in the NBA?

Shaquille O’neal  is the most dominant jump ball taker in modern NBA history. He won more than 76 percent of his tips since data became available in 1996-97.
