In this article, we’ll be talking about who the famous Stephen Curry is.
No player personifies the modern NBA the way Stephen Curry does. Previously, big centers were often a key part of the offensive buildup, but now quick and nimble guards are taking 3 point shots from all sorts of angles and the game has become much faster as a result.
Wardell Stephen Curry, also known as Stephen, or Steph Curry, is a 36 year-old wrecking ball! The man shoots 3s without a problem! In recent years, the Golden State Warriors led by Curry have become one of the best teams in history. Where they rank among the greatest teams may be up for debate, but bear in mind that they hold the record of most victories won in a season when they won 73 of 82 games in 2015-2016.
Many scouts had their doubts about Curry when he signed up for the 2009 draft, even though he was a star in college basketball. Curry played for the Davidson College team, which does not have a great track record when it comes to developing NBA players. Only three former Davidson players went to join the NBA in the 1960s and one more in the 1990s.
That means that Curry was the only player in the last century to join the NBA from Davidson college! Everyone knows that the best college players are not always picked first in the drafts. NBA franchises look closer at how promising the players are considered to be and how likely they are to become great. This way of thinking can often benefit the franchises, but sometimes the decision makers overthink things and miss out on potential superstars.
When Curry signed up for the draft picks, people thought he was too small, too slender, and more of a cross between a point guard and a shooting guard. Also the style of play then, was different than the kind today, despite only 12 years since Curry joined the league. He was chosen 7th in the first round, and it was surprising to see which players got picked ahead of him.
Center, Hasheem Thabeet, was picked 2nd but only lasted four years in the league with an average of 2.2 points per game. When picking Thabeet, the Memphis Grizzlies thought they were getting a promising giant center who could protect the rim well, but it would clearly have been better to pick college star Stephen Curry. Though not chosen first, Curry has clearly shown himself to be a star in basketball.
The Splash Brothers
A shared family background in the NBA has helped Steph Curry and Klay Thompson get to know each other. Dell Curry, Steph’s dad, played in the league primarily with the Charlotte Hornets. Klay’s father, Mychal Thompson, also played in the NBA winning the tournament two times in a row with the Lakers in the late 1980s. Steph and Klay are known for playing intuitively together, acquiring the nickname “Splash Brothers”. They are among the best 3 point shooters of all time; Curry holds the record for the most 3s scored in a single season, having made 402 3 pointers in the 2015-2016 season.
