Lionel Messi, Argentina’s captain, has officially retired from Argentina’s national soccer team. He retired on August 31, 2026 after 21 years of soccer. Messi has many accomplishments, he won eight Ballon D’Ors, won the 2022 World Cup and many other things. The superstar has also won the Copa América (two times: 2021 and 2024), the Finalissima (2022) and a 2008 Summer Olympics Gold Medal. Messi has 207 caps, 125 goals, and 68 assists for Argentina. Even though Leo Messi has retired nationally, he is still playing for Inter Miami. The legendary soccer player has helped his club win the 2025 MLS league alongside Luis Suarez and his Argentinian teammate, Rodrigo de Paul. Lionel Messi had originally written his farewell message on July 21, 2026 (just 2 days before he lost to Spain in the final) but he had chosen to hold on to it to process the weight of the moment. The sudden death of his father, Jorge Messi, on August 8, 2026, solidified his decision. Dealing with a lot of grief, he posted on social media that he had serious doubts of playing for Argentina anymore. Many teammates and soccer players have thanked him. To many he is recognized as the Greatest Of All Time.
