Squash – Not the vegetable

Written by: Lucas M, Reporter in ISFM

Introduction

One day, at Harrow school, England, in 1830, some students noticed a squashed ball. That’s how it all started. This article is all about Squash, not the fruit, but the sport.

How to play

This game is played with teardrop-like rackets and rubber mesh balls. These balls come in different colours indicating different bounciness levels: Orange- extremely slow and low bouncing, Double Yellow- very slow and low bouncing, Yellow- slow and low bouncing, Green- medium bouncing and speed, Red- same as green, and Blue- fast and high bouncing. To play this game, one player spins the racket to decide who serves. If the player guesses “m” and it is “w”, that player has to serve.  For the player to serve, he has to have at least one foot inside the square service box, not touching the service box lines. When the player hits the ball, the opponent has a choice of volleying it or hitting a ground shot.

Conclusion

People have different styles like having a lot of power and/or accuracy. In summary, Squash is a fun and strategic and physical sport.

  1. Bravo Arthur. Super article!

Petit commentaire concernant l’illustration: il s’agit d’un joueur de racquet ball, version américaine du squash. C’est proche mais le terrain, la raquette et la balle sont un peu différents.

  2. Nice work
