Introduction

In this limited edition article, we’ll be talking about the magnificent sport of cricket. It is a big article because the ISFM team worked on it for our 1 year anniversary. Unfortunately, some writers have been busy and couldn’t contribute to the article. Still, we hope you will like it. Have fun!

Rules

  1. Teams: There are two teams, each with 11 players. One team bats while the other bowls and fields.
  2. Batting: The batting team tries to score runs by hitting the ball and running between wickets(sets of sticks) at either end of the pitch. Each run is counted when the batters run safely to the other wicket.
  3. Bowling: The bowling tries to stop the batters from scoring by throwing the ball towards the batter in a way that hits the stumps or gets the batter out. A bowler delivers six  balls (called an Over) before another bowler takes their turn.
  4. Getting out: A batter can be out in different ways, such as:
    • Bowled: If the bowler hits the stumps with the ball.
    • Caught: If the batter hits the ball and a fielder catches it before it hits the ground.
    • Run out: If the batter is out of their ground when the stumps are hit with the bal
  5. Runs: Batters score runs by running back and forth between two wickets. They can also score extra runs by hitting the ball to the boundary-four runs if it hits the ground before crossing the boundary line, or six runs if it crosses the boundary without touching the ground.
  6. Overs: The game is divided into overs, with each bowler delivering six balls in an over. After an over is completed , a different player usually bowls the next one.
  7. Winning: The team that scores the most runs wins the match. The batting team tries to score as many runs as possible, while the bowling team tries to get them out as quickly as they can.

Gear

Cricket is an interesting sport. But of course to play you need equipment. Here is the list of equipment needed to play. A helmet with some bars on it like in American football, some batting gloves, long trousers, and some leg pads. A cricket bat is also included, with a cricket ball. The cricket bat is different from a baseball bat, it has a different form; the handle is normal but the bat is a flat plank of wood. The wooden bat is made of English willow wood. Lastly, you also have to wear a jersey with the team logo on it.

Cricket Bat

History; Invention of cricket

Cricket is believed to have started in 16th-century England. It evolved from simple bat and ball games played in Rural areas. By the 18th century, it became more organized, with formal matches and rules. The first official match was played in 1709, and the rules were written down in 1744. As the British Empire expanded, cricket spread to countries like India, Australia, and South Africa, becoming one of the most popular sports in the world.

History; Cricket over the years

Since it was invented, cricket has evolved massively over time. Cricket was originally a game focused on finesse, strategy, and perfection, but it quickly evolved into a quicker, more aggressive sport. You can also consider this as a more modern transformation. It also started off as a national sport, being popular in England, but later on it became popular worldwide. Besides that, the game hasn’t had any other major changes.

Competition/Teams

Now, it’s time to talk about competition!

In the ICC, (International Cricket Council)

The Indian Mumbai team almost took a spot in the finals, but they had to keep the Indian Gujarat Giants below 156 points or less, but a lively Bhati Furmali did not let that happen. Mumbai missed their chance but they didn’t worry too much: They didn’t just win this match, but kept a perfect at the Brabourne Stadium

Famous Players

Don Bradman

Of course in cricket, there are many professional cricketers. But one man remains probably the best cricketer in the world. Sir Don Bradman was a fantastically talented player in the 1900s. He revolutionized the world of cricket, and made many people want to play this sport. He was of Australian heritage, and was also born in Australia. That was a historic player, now let’s look at some present players. Sachin Tendulkar is an extraordinary Indian batsman, who is currently considered a great player in places all over the world.

Achievements

Cricket became pretty popular in the years 1730s-1740s. Today cricket is popular in India, they even created an Indian cricket league called Indian Premier League (IPL). In 2025, a major cricketing achievement was India’s win at the ICC Champions Trophy, defeating New Zealand by four wickets in the final. This victory marked India’s third Champions Trophy title.
